A Short History

The club was formed on 17th March 1961 as the Biggleswade & District Model Railway Society, the founding members being:-

Hon. Vice President: H Murdock
Chairman: R Linton
Hon. Secretary: K E Dann
Treasurer: R Keech
Assistant Secretary: R Huckle
Committee Members: M Finding, A Gander

By Whitsun 1961 a clubroom had been found at the rear of Biggleswade Conservative Club, and work commenced on the first club layout (Sandy GNR & LNWR) one week later.

The club's first annual Exhibition was held on 28th October 1961 at Drill Hall Shortmead Street Biggleswade at which the ‘unfinished’ layout was exhibited.

Further development resulted in the Whitmouth Pier Layout which was exhibited at Imrex in 19xx.

The club relocated to the loft at rear of Lord Roberts Public House Sandy in 19xx, before it eventually settled on the former Cinema Projection room in the Roundabout Club Sandy (formerly Liberal Club) in 1977, its present location.

A series of highly successful exhibitions later followed, including:-

  • Cheriton Bishop at Imrex
  • First annual exhibition at Stratton School in 1982
  • Cheriton Bishop in Mechlen Belgium - our first European excursion in 1999
  • Sutton at Warley on 6th & 7th December 2003
  • Cheriton Bishop at MOMA in Brussels Belgium
  • Sutton & Cheriton Bishop at Euromodelbouw '05 Genk Belgium - our first two layout exhibition 8th & 9th October 2005
  • Cheriton Bishop at Warley on 2nd & 3rd December 2006
